The Mourning After
Two Regent University Communication & the Arts (Com/Arts) alumni recently received press for their short film, The Mourning After, which is premiering July 9 at the Long Island International Film Expo in Bellmore, N.Y. The festival runs through July 18.
Lawrence "Law" Watford '04 is the director for The Mourning After, which was adapted from an award-winning play and short story, Vigil, by David Ray '03, while the two were classmates in Regent's cinema-television program.
The film follows Chris and Felicia the morning after having an affair. The two prepare to go to work at the World Trade Center, only to discover that it's been attacked and their lives have been spared as a result of their infidelity. Since that day, their lives take dramatically different paths; and three years later, Felicia and Chris reunite, sifting through guilt and torment in search of redemption.
"The film is an allegory about looking backwards after being delivered from something [sinful]," Watford said. "One of the main characters is named Felicia Lott, which is a play on the story of Lot's wife from the Bible ... The consequences for going back from where you were delivered from can be severe."
Watford hopes the film will also convey the need to a person to forgive him or herself for past mistakes, rather than allowing mistakes to define a person's life. "In the movie both Chris and Felicia are dealing with their guilt," Watford said. "However, Felicia endures the long process of making amends for her guilt, while Chris literally becomes consumed by his."
Other Regent Com/Arts alumni credited in the film project include: Sean Michael Doherty '06 (who plays Chris), Elyse Sams '05 (unit production manager and first assistant director) and Mario Concepcion Jackson '06 (cinematographer).
Watford said that Regent's cinema-television program helped equip him for his current career in filmmaking. "The program allowed me the freedom to explore my passion for filmmaking in a way that was stimulating—making me hungry to practice and learn more about my craft."
He currently lives in Brooklyn and works in the Art Department of the NBC show, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Watford also founded the independent motion picture production company, Lawville Solutions, LLC.
