Frequently Asked Questions
1. I currently have a visa other than an F-1; can I study at Regent University?
There are a number of work and dependent visa types that are allowed to study part-time, full-time, or engage in incidental study. The list of these types is too numerous to provide here so please contact the International Admissions Coordinator to check if your visa type allows study without transferring to an F-1.
For A-1, E-1/2, H-1B, H-1C, H-2A, H-2B, H-3, I, L-1, O-1/2, P-1/2/3, Q-1, R-1, TN visa holders: If you are accepted you must submit a letter from your visa sponsor which states whether or not you, as the visa holder, will be maintaining your status for the entire duration of the degree program, and which verifies that the full-time study is not your (visa holder's) primary purpose for being in the United States.
2. What does a Permanent Resident or Resident Alien have to prove beyond the normal admissions pieces?
Those people with a PR or RA card need only provide a copy of their current valid card to the Admissions office.
3. What is the difference between an I-20 and an F-1 visa?
The I-20 document is created by a Regent University Designated School Official (DSO) and is used directly by the student at the U.S. Embassy to obtain the F-1 visa. The F-1 visa is then used at the border to get the student into the country. The I-20 is then used to keep the student legal and in the U.S.
4. If I'm going to live with a sponsor or relative, does that change how much money I have to prove?
Yes. As to how much it changes the number will vary depending on what actual type of support is being given, just housing, or food and housing. This is something that can be worked out after you are accepted to the school.
5. If I enroll in an online program, does that change how much money I must prove?
Yes. If you are accepted as a student in an online degree program and your program does not require that you enter the U.S. to attend courses or a residency session, then you need not provide financial information. Please note that some online degree programs do require a brief residency session which will require that the student have the appropriate visa. See below for additional information regarding online programs which require a short period of residency.
6. How soon can I enter the country on my F-1 visa?
You may enter the U.S. up to 30 days prior to the start date listed on your I-20 document.
7. How long from the time of my application will it take to get my F-1 visa?
This time will vary greatly and will depend mostly on the applicant. If an applicant is very organized and has everything ready at the time of application it may take only a couple months to receive your I-20 to get your visa. On the other hand it is possible to take up to 12 months or longer.
8. How long after graduation can I stay in the country?
From the time of completion of the program or the end date on the I-20 document the student will have 60 days to leave the country or switch to another visa type.
9. I have an F-1 visa from another university and I just want to take one or two classes at Regent University, can I do that?
Yes. You can under the guidelines of concurrent enrollment. However it can only be as a non-degree seeking student and your DSO at your current school must approve the request.
10. Are Canadian and Bermudan citizens allowed to study on a tourist visa?
According to U.S. immigration regulations, you are no longer allowed to enter the United States and study as a tourist. Please note that you do not need to obtain a visa to enter the United States, your I-20 or DS-2019 will be sufficient , unless you are coming into the United States from outside the Western Hemisphere. You also do not need a passport, unless coming from outside the Western Hemisphere, but please be ready to provide a copy of your driver's license and/or birth certificate.
11. Is an F-1 or J-1 visa required for residency?
Please check with Amanda Leffel to see if the program you are interested in requires an F-1 or J-1 visa for residency. The current programs that do not require an F-1 or J-1 visa is the Ph.D. In Counselor Ed and Supervision, Ph.D. and DSL programs within the School of Global Leadership, and the Education Specialist and Doctorate programs. For these programs you may enter Regent on your tourist visa.
If your program does require an F-1 or J-1, you must submit all of the required documentation. For each residency thereafter, Regent University only requires a request form with financials from the Office of International Student Services (OISS).
